How to choose the Best Outdoor TV Antenna

Outdoor TV antennas improve signal reception in areas that have weak signals. They pick signals within a range of 45 – 100 miles from broadcast locations.

There are two types of outdoor TV antennas:

  • uni-directional
  • multi-directional (Omni-directional)

Uni-directional antennas are designed to receive signals from a single direction, while multi-directional antennas can receive signals from all directions. If you have a lot of different networks coming in from all directions, you will want a multi-directional antenna. This means you will get the most channels from every side. This type of antenna is easier to install. Because of its shape it’s extremely convenient to attach multi-directional antennas to the product. Also, you do not have to worry about beamwidth, or adjusting it each time you change the channel.

A VHF/UHF combination antenna:

Make sure you have the perfect type of antenna for your needs. Antennas vary from UHF only, to combination VHF/UHF, to VHF only. Whilst VHF only antennas might get lucky and pick up one or two nearby UHF channels, it won’t pick up high or distant band channels.

A VHF/UHF combination antenna would be the best choice; however a separate antenna, with the correct gain, height, and orientation will ensure amazing picture as well.

Be sure to choose an HDTV antenna that is powerful enough to pull in all the signals that you want, yet avoid getting more antenna than you actually need. A too-powerful HDTV antenna can overwhelm a digital turner if you are in an area with high signal strength.

Best Outdoor TV Antenna Height:

Antenna height is still the most important issue for good reception. The higher the antennas are placed above the ground, the better. This gives you better clearance above other buildings, as well as trees and ground based interference. Your antenna should be at least six feet above your roofline in order to reduce unwanted reflection and bounce of signals or some other types of interference.

Also, another crucial aspect of an antenna is “gain”. This is the measure of sensitivity of an antenna, or its capability to pick up signals. Your antenna should have more gain, the farther you live from the station tower. Gain is also very important in areas with “multi-path” or “ghosting”. Gain adds directionality to your antenna enabling it to pick up the strongest signal and reject, or reflect, the bouncing signals from the back or side of the antenna. Some manufacturers list the gain on the product, but most of them use a mileage rating for estimation of the antenna’s performance.
